Reckoning is work in three parts: Beth-el, Rachel and Blessings each of which is a sequence of linked poems. The first deals with Jacob's relation to his mother, father and brother, and to his experience at Beth-el; the second with his beloved Rachel; the third with his meeting with the angel in the darkness of night before he is to return across the Jordan and to meet again the brother who has sworn to kill him.
